History of the development of the model

This section is in english in honour of Kip (the californian cardelliner) and it contains a summery of the information in Storia del Cardellino from the book Moto Guzzi Guzzino (Giorgio Nada Editore 1993).
HISTORY: EVOLUTION OF THE MOTO GUZZI CARDELLINO
1954 BIRTH OF THE CARDELLINO
1954-55 65cc Differences with the Motoleggera Guzzino:
  • added two box-shielded sheet arms. They are an integrated part of the chassis
and support the newly designed mudguard.
  • rear calipers shock absorbers
  • sturdier wheels (20 "x 2) tires (20" x 2 1/4)
  • 10 more kgs
  • new carburator: DELL'ORTO MU14B2
  • 5Km/hour faster
  • the rack is relocated from the tank to the read mudguard
  • price: 99.000ITL
1956 65cc
  • new telescopic front fork with a single central spring working by compression
  • redesigned (but similar) tank capacity increases to 8 litres
  • redesigned mudguards. Offering more wheel coverage.
  • new hub in light alloy with central brakes
  • weight goes up of 1kg
1957 73cc Several Changes Starting In Late 1956
  • displacement goes up to 73cc by raising the bore to 45mm
As a result, power increases to 2,6 horses at 5.200 rounds.
  • top speed increases to 60Km/hour
  • hand gear is replaced by a foot shift with simple lever
  • Kickstarter is collapsible and chrome plated as in the early Guzzinos
  • now the horn is in the front of the stearing-head and behind the fork spring
  • Dell'Orto provides an updated version of the carburator MU14B3
  • The LUSSO version is introduced while the basic version is now called TURISMO
  • The LUSSO version has:
    • long seat for two passengers
    • new oval tank with double colouring (red and ivory)
    • sporty steering-head
1958 73cc Many novelties starting late 1958: Cardellino becomes the Nuovo Cardellino
  • light alloy cylinder similar to the 1952's Guzzino but with some extra fin and
    chrome plated bore
  • better performance and oil mixture goes down to 2%
  • major changes in the rear part of the chassis: lighter swing-arm, a straightedge
to compress the springs of the suspensions, the upper arms that hold mudguard and
    shocks-absorbers are now slimmer
  • the tube that holds the seat now has oval section
  • new chain guard
  • new exhaust. No longer cylindrical but with a sole shape and two small outlets.
    It is black
1959 73cc TURISMO and LUSSO are practically identical
  • the TURISMO version now has the same tank as the LUSSO
  • the only differences are the seat, the rack (in the TURISMO) and the lower steering-head
1960-61 73cc New head and rear lights
  • the rearlight grows since it has to contain also the stop light
  • as a consequence, the headlight is replaced by one with the same diameter (105mm)
but longer and with different shape
  • The stop switch is placed on the guard that hides the chain's pulley
  • different tank paint. It is now red with the traditional "flame" as
seen on the traditional stornello's and lodola's
1962-64 83cc Finally 83cc and a real suspension
  • displacement goes further up to 83cc by raising the bore to 48mm.
So the power increases to 2,9 horses and the speed is 65Km/h.
  • thanks to a modification to the clutch and the primary transmission, the engine can now
be started while in geer (while pressing the cluth ... obviously)
  • The staple is true telescopic with springs inside the sliders
  • rear suspension is modified adopting two telescopic elements to the sides of the wheel
  • tank chined and squared
  • support and foot rest are stamped sheet
  • larger and modern shape tool case. Gone is the classical cylindrical one.
  • exhaust turned white and with chrome plated tail pipe
  • price: 105.000ITL
END OF PRODUCTION IN 1965

For the time being, in this section I would like to insert the photos of a cardellino for every produced version. We are talking of 12 different versions. I will indicate each of them by the following acronyms:
(54_65, 56_73, 57_73_L, 57_73_T, 58_73_L, 58_73_T, 59_73_L, 59_73_T, 60_73_L, 60_73_T, 62_83_L, 62_73_T)
The first two figures indicate the first year of construction of that variety of Cardellino. The others two figures indicate the engine size and the last letter, if present, indicates the versions which is either lusso (L) or tourism (T).
If some visitor of this page is the owner of one of these versions and he/she would be so kind to send me two photos (a Left and a Right) at the address , I will publish them in this section.
It would be also interesting to publish the photos of Cardellinos with special use like Mail Service, Sidecar, Racing.
With the time this could become a kind of register for the Cardellinos....
